MOB justice was served to a man who attempted to rob a tuck shop owner in Mabheleni area, Wartburg, on Saturday night.
It is alleged that Thabiso Miya (30) and an unknown man confronted the unidentified shop owner, with the former trying to strangle the owner while his accomplice took an undisclosed amount of money and fled on foot.
The businessman overpowered Miya and shouted for help.
A group of about 20 residents came to the shop and assaulted Miya with knobkerries and other sharp objects. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the man tried to flee, but he collapsed about 200 metres from the shop and died.
When the police arrived they found the body with multiple open wounds to his head and right leg. A bush knife and a knobkerrie were found next to him.
Jeevan said they have arrested the 45-year-old tuck shop owner and five male suspects aged between 18 and 20 in connection with the murder.
They will soon appear in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court.
A case of house robbery is also under investigation.
Police are also searching for the deceased’s accomplice and appeal to anyone with information to contact Detective Warrant Officer Mqambeni Myeza of Wartburg police on 033 503 1369 or 072 139 3460.

He had a gunshot wound to the chest. Police believe that Ngubane, a security guard at the school, was confronted by a group of men who fired a shot at him.
The men then broke down a door to the computer room and stole an undisclosed number of computers.
