THE man who is suspected of shooting dead forensic investigator Lawrence Moepi in October appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Regional Court yesterday in connection with the assassination.

Remember Seiphoro (42) appeared on charges of murder and assault with the intent to cause serious bodily harm.

His arrest in Soweto on Saturday is seen as a breakthrough in the police’s investigation into the murder.

Gauteng’s police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini yesterday said the evidence points to the man having shot Moepi.

Moepi, head of the forensic division in the auditing firm SizweNtsalubaGobodo (SNG), was part of a team that had investigated irregularities in involving millions of rands in Cosatu. Part of the audit was to check the sale of Cosatu’s head office for R10 million less than the building’s alleged value. Moepi also investigated cases for the Public Prosecutor.

He was shot five times in the parking area of the auditing firm’s offices in Houghton on October 18.

Regional magistrate Lucas van der Schyff on request of the state postponed the case to next week so that an identity parade can be held. Seiphoro will remain in police custody.

Dlamini said the police are still looking for a second shooter.
