THE first day of the trial run to make Manning Avenue one way left many motorists smiling as they reached work in record time.

A trip from Raisethorpe to Willowton took one driver 15 minutes, while others reported reaching town in 20 minutes instead of the usual hour or more spent sitting in a traffic gridlock.

Councillor Mergan Chetty yesterday thanked motorists for their patience and said it will take two to three days before glitches are ironed out and everyone gets used to the system.

He also expressed his gratitude to the traffic officers who were out at dawn yesterday to ensure that the system worked.

A blitz poll of motorists saw many giving the system a big thumbs up.

However, some were cautious about being too hopeful, asking how long it would last. One motorist said: “We have been stuck in traffic jams for so long, yesterday morning’s drive to work seems too good to be true. I am scared to say too much; I don’t want to jinx it.”

Politicians and citizens alike have thanked The Witness for the role the newspaper has played in bringing this traffic issue to the attention of the city’s executive.
