JOHANNESBURG — Cellphone giant MTN has decided to drop its sponsorship of the Lions’ re-entry into next year’s Super Rugby series.

MTN, which has been the main sponsor of the Lions and Golden Lions for the past three years, will not renew its sponsorship, which had been signed in 2011 between the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) and its former associate, Guma TAC, represented by its executives Robert Gumede and Ivor Ichikowitz.

At the time sources estimated the sponsorship to be worth “approximately R20 million per year for three years”.

Some of the Lions’ sponsors have adapted their sponsorship shares when the team did not take part in this year’s Super Rugby, but others such as MTN kept up its support.

Lions rugby is now without a main brand sponsor.
