Members of the public stumbled upon the skeletal remains of an unknown woman in the Pietermaritzburg CBD on Monday afternoon, local police said yesterday.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said the body was found at about 3.30 pm lying in a bushy vacant plot between Pietermaritz and Church streets.

“On arrival at the scene, police found the skeletal remains of an unknown person … pathologists have determined that the body may have been lying in the bushes for more than four months and that the deceased was a female between 25 to 30 years of age,” said Jeevan.

Jeevan said the woman was of slender build, about 1,65 metres tall and was wearing a dark-and-light-brown striped jersey, blue jeans and white takkies.

“Police are making an appeal to anyone with information regarding the identity of the deceased and information that will assist in the investigation to contact the Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Mays of the Pietermaritzburg Detective Services, at 033 845 2630 or 082 413 8474,” she said.
