WITH the National First Division entering round six, several has-been players with PSL experience are being rescued by second-division tier clubs who seek promotion for next season.

Former Moroka Swallows striker Lungisani Ndlela is the latest to be snapped up by Inland Stream Free State-based outfit United FC.

The gangling Ndlela, who was also rejected by SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns, was turned away by PSL side Maritzburg United when he came for trials last month.

His contribution was immediately felt when he helped United FC overcome FC AK 1-0 in Eldorado Park at the weekend.

Another player rejected by Maritzburg, ex-Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport forward Petrus Mahlatsi, scored a hat-trick for Blackburn Rovers when they walloped Hanover Park 3-1 in Cape Town.

Other ex-Premiership established campaigners who have found a home in the NFD include former Kaizer Chiefs right-back Cyril Nzama, Tonic Chabalala (Orlando Pirates and Thanda Royal Zulu) and nomadic McDonald Mukansi. They have joined Batau FC.

Their combined experience, however, could not yield the desired results as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Jomo Cosmos.

The result saw Jomo Sono’s side being leapfrogged by Steve Barker’s University of Pretoria, who now top the log after notching up a crucial away 1-0 win over Witbank Spurs.

In the Coastal Stream, third-placed Thanda Royal Zulu are gradually closing the one-point gap between them and pacesetters FC Cape Town and Bay United after the Professor Ngubane’s men edged Nathi Lions 3-1 in the KZN derby on Friday in KwaMashu.

Bay beat FC Cape Town 2-1.
