THE policeman who shot himself after he went on a killing spree, killing two women and a 13-year-old in Ulundi last week, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday. He allegedly killed a senior clerk, Fikile Gumede, a policeman, Superintendent Bongi Masemola, and teenager Busani Vilakazi, and injured Constable Z.N. Ntshanshayi (25) before turning the gun on himself.

The suicide attempt failed and he was admitted to hospital. Nthsanshayi was also hospitalised and is reported to be recovering well.

SAPS spokesman Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker said the officer was discharged and is under police guard. He said the police are taking statements from witnesses and will take a statement from the suspect before charging him.

Yesterday, memorial services for the dead were held in Ulundi.

The funeral for Masemola will take place on Saturday June 6, in Soshanguve.

Provincial commissioner, Commissioner Hamilton Ngidi, and Transport Community Safety and Liason MEC Bheki Cele are expected to attend the memorial service.

Funeral arrangements for Gumede had not been finalised.
