MOST schools will be playing their penultimate cricket fixture of 2010 today. Of the four top matches, three are in the midlands, with just one in Durban.
DHS will be hosting Northwood, and during the first term it had two comfortable wins against the side from over the Umgeni. In a T20 fixture, Northwood lost by 64 runs after managing only 59 runs all; in the normal Saturday fixture, DHS had a comfortable 97-run win.
As Northwood lost last week against Thomas More, their confidence will be low, whereas DHS are standing tall after some good cricket. It is very likely that DHS will have another comfortable victory in the game at Crusaders.
For cricket lovers in the capital, Goldstones is the place to be, where Maritzburg College welcome Hilton to the first match this year between the two schools. During the first term the game was cancelled due to bad weather.
College have much the better record this year with just one loss in KZN, against Kearsney. They have won 13 matches against other KZN schools.
Hilton have lost three matches, but only won two against KZN schools, and both these have been against Northwood. It will be a huge upset if the home side does not win today.
Michaelhouse host Kearsney and they were unfortunate to have the Saturday game cancelled as in the Sunfoil Night series Michaelhouse had made a competitive 166 for 6 when rain stopped play. Kearsney will be determined to hang on to their unbeaten season against other KZN schools, but playing on the Roy Gathorne Oval at Michaelhouse it may prove to be difficult.
St Charles, after some ordinary performances, will have a chance to assert themselves in their home fixture against Clifton. They were also rained off in the first term, with Clifton just having begun their innings in pursuit of the St Charles total of just over 200. Clifton do have some talented batsmen and they will be confident after the tied game against Westville. It could see an interesting tussle developing on the St Charles Oval.
