PIETERMARITZBURG hip hop crew Spar10z will be hoping to win the hearts of dance fans around South Africa when they take part in the finals of e.tv’s reality show, Step Up Or Step Out.

The group, which also competed in the competition last year, have made it into the top 10, and tomorrow at 6.05 pm you’ll be able to follow them as they try to win R70 000 in cash and a Big Boy scooter for each member of the crew

Spar10z is made up of Siyabonga Ngcobo, Sthandile Majola, Sithabiso Mthethwa, Blessing Ndlovu and Siyabonga Ngcobo. Their main aim is to uplift the youth and encourage positive behaviour through dance and music.

Founded on June 16, 2008, Spar10z are part of a youth development programme run by the YMCA in Pietermaritzburg.

They will be competing against Tembisa Revolution from the East Rand; Vintage from Johannesburg; WeDfy from Cape Town; African Revolution from Soweto; Black Converse from Kimberley in the Northern Cape; Kagiso Gumboot Dancers from the West Rand; Psychotics Crew from Mitchell’s Plain, Cape Town; Reptilez Crew from Soweto; and Duduza Young Generations from the East Rand.

The teams’ first challenge is in the dance hall category, and the top 10 will have to do their best to impress the judges to stay in the competition.

Many of the crews are comfortable with the genre, but some, like the gumboot and tap dancers, are struggling to dance to the beat, as they normally create their own. Which crew will be going home? — Arts Editor.
