THE Maritzburg Collegians first team were unable to produce a repeat of last week’s win over Rovers when they went down 5-2 to Pinetown in KZN Men’s Super League action in Durban.

Collegians edged Rovers 4-3 last time out, but this time they were upstaged by Pinetown who led 5-0 with 15 minutes to go, Chad Koekemoer (two) and Brian Gravett getting amongst the goalscorers.

Collegians player/coach Gavin Jelley lent some semblance of respectability to the scoreline with two goals from field play in the last 10 minutes.

At 7.30 pm tomorrow, Collegians are scheduled to play Durban Varsity at the AB Jackson turf while PMB Varsity are away to Pinetown at Queensmead at the same time.

Meanwhile, Charmaine Koekemoer, the South Africa U21 women’s hockey team’s Junior World Cup project manager who is also director of sport at Voortrekker and KZN Schools’ Hockey chairperson, told The Witness that no less than four players who learnt the sport at Pietermaritzburg schools are in the SA U21 squad for the training camp due to be held in July.

One of the four is current Epworth captain Heather McEwan, while recent matriculants from PMB schools also in the SA group are Phume Mbande (Carter), Hlubi Sipamla (GHS) and Taryn Mallett (St Anne’s). Former Durban schoolgirl Jacinta Jubb, now studying at Tuks in Pretoria, is also in the squad.

“It is a testimony to the popularity and quality of hockey amongst our schools here in the capital,” said Koekemoer.

The SA U12 women’s team play in the Junior World Cup Africa Qualifier Tournament in Potchefstroom later this year. The tournament winners will go to the Junior World Cup finals in New Delhi, India next year.

Today sees the Scottsville derby between home team St John’s and Epworth at 4.15 pm, which is one of four very interesting Parklane Superspar Schoolgirls’ League fixtures over the next six days.
