A TEACHERS’ national annual general meeting (AGM) held in Pietermaritzburg over the weekend heard how teachers are unhappy with the problems in black schools.
As a result of difficulties being experienced, they lag behind their former model C counterparts, but are expected to produce equal matric results.
The AGM, which ends today, drew 300 maths, science and commerce teachers from all over South Africa.
The lack of unity between teachers from former model C schools and black schools was clear as there were no white teachers present.
“Even as we are holding this workshop, they [white teachers] did not attend. This is the same when it comes to strikes,” said Mhlonipheni Nkabinde, who is the project co-ordinator for the National Commerce Educators Development Association (Nacoeda).
Nkabinde said that even for workshops organised by the Education Department, most white teachers do not attend. This is worrying because well-trained teachers should share knowledge with poorly trained ones.
Concurring with Nkabinde, a Trust for Educational Advancement in SA representative said black schools are having to make do with teachers who lack computer literacy, which is required by new teaching technology.
Nombulelo Mandindi said the pregnancy rate, crime, drugs and overage pupils are problems black schools face.
Nacoeda president Moloidi Tshelane called on teachers to ensure they produce entrepreneurial pupils. He said this must start with teachers practising it in their schools.
“This may well be the quality that is most lacking among young people … Ask yourself this, how enterprising is my school? Does it fend for itself? Does it wait for someone to come and fix the broken window, does it wait for someone to come and repair the toilet … or does it make a plan … ? Are the learners surrounded by enterprise in their daily lives?” he said.
