DURBAN Central police are looking for witnesses who may assist them in their investigation into the murder of a teenage boy after he came to the aid of a woman being robbed.

On Saturday at about 2.35 am, Nathan van Reenen (17) was stabbed and killed at Walter Gilbert Street near the Moses Mabhida stadium.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Nathan was with his friends in their vehicle near Moses Mabhida when they saw a woman being robbed by a man.

The victim went out to help the woman and the attacker ran off.

Nathan gave chase and caught the man. During the scuffle, it is alleged that the attacker stabbed Nathan in the neck. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

“A case of murder was opened for further investigation. The woman who was being robbed disappeared and did not open a case. We are appealing to the woman who was allegedly robbed by the same suspect to come forward and report the case to the police,” said Zwane.

Police have not made any arrests at this stage and are appealing to anyone with information with regards to the suspect to contact Warrant Officer Raven Mundhree of Durban Central at 031 325 4660 or 082 783 4760.

Information may also be given to the Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

All information will be treated with strictest confidentiality and informants may remain anonymous, the police said.
