Three PMB teams vie for promotion

Joe Gengan

There are three very good Pietermaritzburg soccer teams in the Vodacom League and one would expect at least one of them to be promoted to the higher National First Division come the end of the season. However, it will not be easy as the teams have already discovered after playing their sixth fixture, as all the teams are equally determined to make their mark in the promotions.

Maritzburg City, Sobantu Shooting Stars and Brazil United represent Pietermaritzburg in the league with Maritzburg City being the senior citizens, having played in the league before.

Sobantu Shooting Stars and Brazil United are new in the league after Sobantu bought the franchise of a Newcastle team, while Brazil earned promotion from the Castle Super League.

Both Maritzburg City and Sobantu Shooting Stars were involved in goalless draws on Sunday against top opposition in Amajuba United Killers and Rangers FC respectively.

Of the two, City had a tougher game as it is not easy coming back with a win from Newcastle. But Shooting Stars were playing at home and, with a star-studded side, were expected to win against Rangers. Although Rangers have fielded a virtually unchanged side for the past two years, they nevertheless started as underdogs for this game as Shooting Stars have a team assembled largely from the professional ranks.

The match between Brazil and Kwamashu All Stars did not take place as All Stars failed to arrive. It was probably a case of miscommunication, with Brazil notifying the league that their matches are now being played on a Friday night instead of Sundays and at Northdale instead of Wadley, said an official of the club.

The Wadley Stadium is the place to be this Sunday when Maritzburg City and Sobantu Shooting Stars meet in a crunch local derby.

There is no love lost between these two and a top-notch game is expected. Brazil United travel to Cato Manor to engage Bush Bucks.

If the game against Shooting Stars is anything to go by — Brazil lost by an own goal — then they should have the beating of Bucks. But it will be a struggle.
