Titans name potent squad for season opener against Dolphins

THE Northern Titans selectors have named a strong 13-man squad in terms of SuperSport Series strength for the four-day match against the Dolphins at Kingsmead tomorrow. Clearly the idea is to have enough players on hand so that the final XI can be as balanced as possible once conditions have been assessed.

While the Titans welcome back the in-form Martin van Jaarsveld and Imran Tahir, both having earned rave county cricket reviews, they also have some interesting new faces.

Former Highveld Lions opening batsman Blake Snijman is one, as is EP quick bowler Basheer Walters (22). Then there is inexperienced opener Rushdi Jappie (23) of WP, who has an extremely modest record, which makes his signing puzzling.

The core of the side is proven quality, though, including Paul Harris, Morne Morkel, Gulam Bodi Ethy Mbhalati, Heino Kuhn — scorer of a double century against the Dolphins last season — and Faf du Plessis.

Prolific batsman Van Jaarsveld arrived back yesterday after receiving the Professional Cricketers’ Association Player of the Year accolade, while Tahir jetted in on Monday.

Cricket South Africa places Tahir among the white players as he is a Pakistani. This means that the Titans will have to field another four non-white players in their final XI.

TITANS: Pierre Joubert (capt), Martin van Jaarsveld, Paul Harris, Morne Morkel, Ethy Mbhalati, Imran Tahir, Heino Kuhn, Faf du Plessis, Blake Snijman, Rushdi Jappie, Farhaan Behardien, Basheer Walters, Gulam Bodi.

•Garry Hampson was inadvertently left out of the Inland squad in yesterday’s Witness. The error is regretted.
