Traffic fines totalling R360 150 were imposed at weekend road blocks in KwaZulu-Natal, while 229 charges were issued.
Five people were arrested and 19 vehicles were impounded during the operation, which covered Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Newcastle. The cases included impersonating a traffic officer, using false number plates, theft of diesel, bribery and illegal immigration. The Pietermaritzburg Public Transport Enforcement Unit (PTEU) conducted the road blocks from Friday to Sunday.
KZN Transport spokeswoman Nonkululeko Mbatha applauded the PTEU for “a job well done”.
Transport MEC Bheki Cele said the department will step up its efforts to ensure road safety during the festive season. “Our mission is to have an accident-free, safe and healthy festive season. We will ensure that 100% compliance on our roads is the order of the day,” said Cele.
