YESTERDAY morning’s traffic chaos was caused by a combination of the collapsed bridge over the Dorpspruit and an accident in which an alleged drunk driver knocked into two pedestrians in Manning Avenue.

The accident happened shortly before 7 am, the driver was arrested at the scene and the injured pedestrians rushed to hospital.

Motorists contacted The Witness asking whether there were problems with the one-way system. They asked why it was not working yesterday when it had on other days. Inquiries with traffic authorities revealed that the accident caused a hold-up.

The north-bound lane from the CBD has been closed since Friday because of a collapsed section of the Dorpsruit bridge on Chota Motala Road. The road is expected to re-open today.

Project manager for the South African National Road Agency Limited (Sanral) Gavin Harrison said they had hoped the work would be finished on Sunday afternoon. However, rain prevented the repair work from continuing. He said the construction team were busy with the repairs and provided it did not rain overnight, the road should be opened by today.
