A 16-YEAR-old boy was killed while his 17-year-old relative was playing with a firearm, which the deceased found negligently kept, in Dalton outside Pietermaritzburg on Monday night.
The firearm was licensed, but its owner was arrested for contravening the Firearm Control Act and failing to safeguard the weapon.
Police spokesman Inspector Joey Jeevan discovered the deceased with a gunshot wound behind his left ear in a Majozi homestead house in kwaManzi area. Next to his body was a 7,65 mm handgun with an expended cartridge.
It was later established that the deceased found the firearm in his relative’s house where he had gone to collect his clothes. He took the weapon, which he found lying among the clothes, and later handed it to his relative.
“The relative then began playing with the firearm resulting in a shot going off and fatally wounding the 16-year-old youth,” said Jeevan.
The 17-year-old male appeared in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court and has been released into his parents’ custody.
Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the incident.
