MARITZBURG United have appointed former Manning Rangers, Santos and Mamelodi Sundowns administrator Afzal Khan as their CEO, writes MARC STRYDOM.

The announcement was made on the club’s website on the weekend. Khan, who won league titles with United coach Gordon Igesund as a team manager with Rangers and Santos, will oversee the day-to-day adminstration of the PMB team.

It is Khan’s second stint at United having left the club acrimoniously in 2004/05.

Khan, recognised as one of the most well-connected adminstrators in SA football, had his career tinged by controversy when he was associated with the saga at Sundowns, where Venezuelan striker Jose Torrealba’s signature was forged on a new contract. While no culprit was ever identified for the forgery, Khan was held ulitimately responsible and fired by president Patrice Motsepe.

“Afzal comes with a wealth of administrative experience … and will also help contribute in the club’s vision in growing the club into a marketable and sustainable brand,” chairman Farouk Kadodia told the website.
