MODIMOLLE (Nylstroom) — “I was subjected to two-and-a-half hours in indescribable pain, but nothing will ever compare to the pain I went through when I heard my child’s screams when he was shot three times.”

Ina Bonnette, whose son Conrad was allegedly shot dead by his stepfather Johan Kotzé, was speaking in an interview with Bela-Bela paper Die Pos.

She told the paper that after Kotzé allegedly forced three men to rape her, shot dead her son and tortured her for hours, he lay down next to her on the bed and said: “Old girl, you have no idea how much I love you.”

During the funeral of her son yesterday, while Kotzé was appearing in court in Modimolle, it was clear Bonnette was still in pain and had trouble walking.

She had to be helped to stand.

Bonnette, who was estranged from Kotzé and has reassumed her previous surname, has given permission to be identified in the media.

She said her injuries are healing, but it will be a while before she is completely well.

She has had plastic surgery to repair injuries to her breasts and internal injuries, and is also on anti-retrovirals to prevent HIV.

“I’m only half a woman,” Bonnette told Huisgenoot magazine.

“I won’t be interested in anyone else again.”

On the day of the attack, she was lured to his rented house by Kotzé. There she was gang-raped by three men, and afterwards, Kotzé allegedly sexually tortured her with various tools, including a fondue fork and pliers.

Then he allegedly lured Conrad to the house under false pretences and shot him dead.

“So much pain … I think you can survive the trauma of terrible pain, but I don’t know if you can recover from the pain of hearing your child beg for his life and then hear him shot dead,” she told Die Pos.

“Conrad begged him ‘no, oom, please don’t shoot me’, and then he was shot in the leg

“Then Conrad said: ‘please oom, don’t, don’t … and then he was shot in the chest.”

Conrad fell to the floor in his bedroom, next to the room in which his mother was tied up.

Then, she said, Kotzé shot him in the head and everything went quiet.
