Five KZN men arrested for shooting at the police and illegal firearms

Five men aged between 21 and 30 are expected to appear at the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on, on the KZN North Coast, on Tuesday for shooting at the police and being in possession of illegal firearms.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police received information about men carrying firearms at Waterloo on Monday afternoon during a joint operation by various units in Verulam.

“A taxi with suspects was spotted on Bat Road in Waterloo. When the taxi stopped to drop off passengers, five men alighted from the taxi. Upon seeing the police officers, the suspects opened fire at police.

“During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was shot and wounded. He was searched and police found a pistol with ammunition in his possession,” said Mbele.

She added another man was found in possession of a revolver.

“They will be profiled to check if they are linked to other serious cases reported in Verulam and surrounding areas. The firearms which were seized will be subjected to ballistic testing,” said Mbele.
