A security guard sustained gunshot wounds when an unknown assailant fired at him on Friday morning in Isipingo.

A security guard sustained gunshot wounds when an unknown assailant fired at him on Friday morning in Isipingo.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the unnamed man was on his way to work when he was accosted by the gunman.

Gwala said:

“The complainant alleged that this [Friday] morning at 6.30 am, he was on the way to work and was walking on Clarke Road in Isipingo when he spotted an unknown vehicle that passed him. Suddenly, he said the vehicle made a U-turn and lowered the window. Shots were fired at the victim by the suspects who were in the vehicle, and he sustained gunshot wounds to the head and chest. The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.”

Gwala said a case of attempted murder is being investigated by Isipingo police.

Security guards have increasingly been targeted by criminals recently. The motive behind these attacks is however not clear.

On Monday, two security guards were shot dead while guarding employees who were repairing an electricity fault on Amanzimtoti Road in KwaMashu.

A third guard was critically injured during the shooting and was rushed to hospital.

The Witness reported at the time that the gunmen stole the guards’ firearms before fleeing the scene.
