Pietermaritzburg man, Njabulo Ndlovu, has been sentenced to five life imprisonments for three counts of murder and two counts of rape which he committed in Sobantu last month.
Ndlovu was sentenced by the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday morning.
Ndlovu pleaded guilty to brutally strangling to death two women, 65-year-old Zanele Ndlela, her daughter Simangele Ndlela (46) and eight-year-old granddaughter, Zenande Ndlela, in their Sobantu home last month.
Ndlovu also pleaded guilty to raping Zenande (8) twice and also strangling her to death.
Some of the family members could not listen to the whole sentencing as the judge was describing the post-mortem results which revealed the gruesome way in which the three were killed.
The post-mortem read out in a packed court also gave a detailed statement on the bruises sustained by Zenande after Ndlovu had raped her.
The crowd inside the court was emotional throughout the proceeding.
The court room was packed with residents, relatives of the victims and activists.
