Four people have died and eight injured in a mass shooting at a Pietermaritzburg tavern.

Four people died after a shooting at a Pietermaritzburg tavern, in KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday evening.
Eight others were rushed to the hospital after they sustain gunshot injuries.

It is alleged that two armed men entered the tavern and started shooting randomly at patrons at a tavern in Sweetwaters. They then fled the scene.

Two people died at the scene while the other two died at the hospital. They were aged between 30 and 45.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, said it was alleged that around 8.30 pm, a group of people were having drinks at a tavern at Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg when a vehicle arrived and parked outside the property.

“Two males jumped out of the vehicle, entered the tavern and fired random shots at the patrons. A total of twelve people were shot. Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation at Plessislaer SAPS,” said Gwala.

She added the docket has been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit who will took over the investigation.

KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has condemned shooting and he has deployed members of Crime Intelligence, forensic experts as well as a tactical unit to form part of an investigation team led by the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit.

“The team will be working around the clock to track down and bring to book those responsible for this shooting”, said Mkhwanazi on Sunday.

“In the meantime, we are appealing to anyone who may be able to assist with information which could assist police in the successful investigation of this case.”
