Six men were arrested after holding shop owners, security guards and shoppers hostage during an attempted robbery in Ladysmith on Sunday morning.

It is alleged that the armed men tried to rob a local supermarket, but this was foiled by swift responses by local security officers and police.

Ladysmith SAPS, K9 unit and TRT officials quickly surrounded the supermarket, which is situated in the CBD area, to free victims from a hostage situation.

They were able to safely get them out and arrest their alleged capturers within minutes. A large crowd gathered outside the supermarket while the law enforcement officers worked.

The victims were treated for injuries as they alleged that they were assaulted during an attempted robbery.

One of the hostages told the Ladysmith Herald that armed men burst into the shop and started barking orders at them.

“I was hit with the back of the gun and forced to lay down. They took the cellphone and wallet. I thought that I was going to die today,” said the hostage, who thanked the police for their quick response and for making sure that they came out of the shop alive.

Another pregnant woman told police that she had never been this scared in her life.

Charges of armed robbery are being investigated by the Ladysmith police officers.

It was alleged that the six armed men are possibly linked to other armed robberies in the Ladysmith CBD area, but police could not confirm this at the time of publication
