KZN man charged with triple murder abandons bail

Man facing three counts of murder and two counts of rape abandons bail.

A large group of community members gathered outside the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's court for triple murder case.

A man (29) charged with the murder of a grandmother, her daughter and grandchild on Monday evening in Sobantu, has decided to abandon bail.

This comes after the he appeared before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, facing three counts of murder and two counts of rape.

Zanele Ndlela (65), her daughter Smangele Ndlela (46) and her grandchild Zenande Ndlela (eight) were killed. It is alleged that the man, who cannot be named as he is yet to plead to the rape charges, also raped Smangele along with her child Zenande.

It is believed that the three family members were strangled. Their lifeless bodies were discovered by a family member just after 8 pm.

During the court proceeding yesterday, the neatly dressed man stared straight ahead. He told the court that he had no intention of applying for bail. The court also heard that he has a previous conviction where he was sentenced on May 13, after he stole his father’s car and sold it.

The court heard that he was sentenced to five years, all of which were suspended. The matter was then postponed to July 7 for further investigation.

The state told the court that the investigating officers have asked the man to be detained at the Mountain Rise Police Station as they need to continue with the investigation.

The court was packed to full capacity with families, community members and leaders who wanted to witness the court proceedings.
