KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Sihle Zikalala, will on Tuesday visit Durban’s Ohlanga High School as part of Freedom Day commemorations in the province.

Founded by former ANC president John Langalibalele Dube, Ohlanga High School is where former president Nelson Mandela cast his vote during the country’s first democratic elections held on April 27, 1994.

Celebrated under the theme “The year of Charlotte Maxeke” Tuesday’s commemorations will also see several MECs converging on Durban.

KZN provincial government spokesperson, Lennox Mabaso, said both Dube and Maxeke played a critical role in the liberation of South Africans.

“April 27 marks a significant date in our calendar where South Africans from all walks of life had the opportunity to cast their vote for the first time in our history. They hoped for a new beginning that would give birth to a better life for all.”
