It is still unclear what led to the shooting at a tavern in the Pietermaritzburg CBD on Sunday night in which one person died.
Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala said the man, who was about 30 years old, was rushed to East Boom Clinic where he later died. He has not yet been identified.
The police were called in to East Boom Clinic and were told that a man was brought in by unknown people who said he was shot at a tavern and did not explain what happened.
“Police are investigating a case of murder and no one has been arrested,” said Gwala.
This incident comes a week after Pietermaritzburg police embarked on an operation to monitor and check taverns’ compliance throughout the district. During the operation about 81 people were arrested for different cases.
When The Witness visited the establishment on Monday, a person who was in charge but did not disclose her name, disputed that the incident had happened inside the tavern.
