The newly-elected president of the Pietermaritzburg and Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB), Dr John Buyers, said he is up for the challenge of the immense responsibility he has taken on.

Buyers, who has been involved in the chamber for almost 16 years, is also a managing director for Preformed Line Products. He was elected PMCB president during the annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday evening. The outgoing president is Bongi Mshengu.

“There’s a lot of work to do in Pietermaritzburg and I am up for it. This came as a big surprise as I was not expecting it,” said Buyers.

I still have to absorb it as it has not yet sunk in. I understand that it carries a lot of responsibility. I am representing all the businesses in Pietermaritzburg, and they are relying on me and my committee to grow business

He said he would like to see a lot of co-operation from businesses in terms of contributing to the future of the city. “I would like to see us focusing more on the infrastructure of Pietermaritzburg … I will be driving the looking [for] improvements and working with municipal counterparts in creating an environment where we can improve infrastructure and electricity, and encourage investment in PMB,” he said

The newly-elected board members are: Colin Love, John Buyers (president), Jaco Wiese, Raj Seeparsad, Lungile Mbuyisa, Bonginkosi Mshengu, Tinus Havinga, Melanie Veness (CEO) and Sharryn Middleton. Veness said the annual general meeting is held to provide a report-back on the chamber’s finances and the work done during the course of the last financial year.

“It was wonderful to have an in-person AGM. I think it brings back the old feeling of togetherness …” she said.

“We welcome the new board members … We had such amazing people who stood for election that I am only sorry we didn’t have space to accommodate everyone …” said Veness.
