One person was killed after seven trucks and multiple cars crashed on the N3 south-bound lanes near the Shongweni intersection, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday night.
Some of the vehicles caught alight. According to Rob McKenzie of the KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services, one person was critically injured.
He said the injured person was airlifted to the hospital for further medical care. McKenzie said firefighters from eThekwini Municipality were on the scene on Friday night to extinguish the blaze.
Initially, both lanes were closed following the crash, however the north bound lane has been fully opened.
McKenzie said traffic was being diverted at Shongweni off-ramp onto the M13 highway. He said the exact cause of the crash was still unknown and was being investigated by the authorities.
Clean-up operations are still ongoing.
