One person was allegedly shot and injured after a fight erupted between waste-pickers at the New England Road landfill site in Pietermaritzburg, on Tuesday afternoon.

It is alleged there was an argument between the waste-pickers residing inside the landfill site, which culminated in shots being fired.

Shaheen Suleiman, the owner of Magma Security, said it was unclear what had started the argument, however, he confirmed that there was shooting amongst the waste-pickers.

A huge plume of smoke could be seen coming from the landfill site and according to Suleiman, those who were fighting also set alight housing/camping structures inside the dump.

A source said the injured man had been shot in the chest and it was alleged that about eight people had firearms. Sources said a number of people were injured, but this was not confirmed.

Those at the scene said mothers and children were seen running to the nearby bushes as their homes were burning down.

According to the Msunduzi Fire Department, the fire was put out in no time and was prevented from spreading to other areas inside the site.

“… A number of shacks were also burnt down, maybe around nine of them,” said a fire department source.

The fire department also confirmed that there was indeed a shooting and one person was injured.
