Pietermaritzburg businessman and culinary enthusiast Roy Smith took advantage of the municipal elections on Monday and set up his trailer opposite a voting station in Hayfields.

Smith said because he holds a permit to trade opposite the Wesley Methodist Church he knew he had to come out and sell his popular bacon and egg rolls.

He said people had been open to the idea, especially those who had seen his “Nom-That’s delicious” food trailer elsewhere in the City.

“There have been several customers. We have sold food and people who know us stop and buy something.”

Smith said he was well known in the area and he thought there would be queues and people would buy food as they waited.

“There have been several customers. We have sold food and people who know us stop and buy something,” said Smith.

He said he hoped the outcome of the elections would lift the sense of despair and frustration that currently engulfs the business community and residents.

“The only way for this to happen is for people to access the services that they need and for people to feel safe no matter who they are,” said Smith.

He said one of the major concerns were the effects of Covid-19 and the unrest in July. “The reality is that the ruling party hasn’t delivered and this has created an opportunity for other people to step in,” said Smith.

He said after the unrest in July, when businesses were looted and torched, many communities realised their power.

“I won’t lie, I am hoping the ANC loses its majority because of the corruption and also because they have failed everybody, especially the people who supported them,” said Smith.

He said it was criminal that the party had used the poor and destitute to line their own pockets. “Therefore it is time for them to fall. The ANC must fall.
