The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the deaths of three men who were allegedly shot dead by police officers in Plessislaer, Pietermaritzburg.
Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa said it was alleged that the three men had parked their unlicensed car under the tree next to a voting station in Azalea township on Monday when they were approached by the police.
Langa said as they got closer, the unlicensed vehicle sped off and their members gave chase.
“The vehicle suddenly stopped and the three men with firearms jumped out and shot at the members,” she said.
Langa said the police then retaliated and shot the three men dead.
“IPID is investigating the matter and the motive for the three men parking under the three next to the voting station is unknown as yet. As we continue with our investigation, more information will be brought forward,” she said.
She added that two firearms were recovered so far.
