A Pietermaritzburg woman, Nontuthuko Manqele (21), accused of kidnapping and repeatedly strangling a four-year-old child made a brief appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

A Pietermaritzburg woman, Nontuthuko Manqele (21), accused of kidnapping and repeatedly strangling a four-year-old child, made a brief appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

She was arrested on Tuesday.

It is alleged that Manqele kidnapped, repeatedly strangled and threw the child into the river next to Alexandra Park on Tuesday morning. It is alleged that the child also had bottles thrown at her by a group of four people who are said to have kidnapped her from school.

It is believed that it was also the child’s birthday on Tuesday.

Manqele’s matter was postponed to May 26 for a formal bail application and she was remanded in custody.

The Witness visited the scene where the child was allegedly thrown into the river on Wednesday.

She had to crawl up a three-metre bank to get help after it is believed she was left for dead.

The child was assisted by bystanders who called for help.
