The water at Mkondeni Spruit is red because there is a sewer overflow due to blockages, said Msunduzi Municipality on Friday.

The water at Mkondeni Spruit is red because there is a sewer overflow due to blockages, said Msunduzi Municipality on Friday.

Residents were alarmed when they saw the stream water had turned red and questioned if an industrial company was illegally dumping hazardous chemicals into the stream. Municipal spokesperson, Ntobeko Mkhize, said the red colouration of the water in the stream was not hazardous.

“The red colour showing in pictures is not hazardous, however, there have been complaints of smell. It may take some time for the dirt to wash out as this is a low lying river,” Mkhize said.

“There are a number of industries that discharge to the sewer line and there is permission for that. However, due to the blockages that were experienced, the sewer was overflowing into the stream.”
