“It is alleged that the victim was killed by a known suspect following a domestic dispute. She was declared dead on the scene. A case of murder was opened at Point SAPS and the matter is under investigation,” she said.

The student has been identified as 23-year-old Xolile Mbatha.

News of her death have sent shockwaves throughout the student populace in the university.

MUT’s Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) issued a statement, saying the incident brings into question student safety at residences.

“We vehemently denounce such barbaric acts and call for the institution to deploy all means necessary to have the culprit apprehended and serve an extreme sentence that is befitting of his actions,” the statement reads.

At this point it is unclear whether the man who stabbed Mbatha was also a student at the university.
