Sobantu residents gathered outside the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday morning where a man was set to appear for triple murder and double rape charges.
The residents and the family were led by the KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, and other ANC leaders from Moses Mabhida Region.
The man is accused of brutally killing Zanele Ndlela (65), her daughter Simangele Ndlela (46) and an eight-year-old granddaughter, Zenande Ndlela, in their home in Sobantu last month.
Women rights activists, residents of Sobantu Township, social workers and representatives from community organisations have called for the court to impose a stiffer sentence to the rape and murder accused.
“We want to see this heartless man rot in jail. It is important that we make our voice heard and we want to see justice for all women and children who face abuse, rape and murders in our communities,” said Khoza.
She said all citizens of the province would be relieved to see the rape and murder accused being sentenced for a long time.
“We have no doubt that judges will set an example about people like this one.”
