There was a full road closure of the N3 near Pietermaritzburg on Sunday evening after a “runaway truck” crashed into another and caused a huge explosion.

There was a full road closure of the N3 near Pietermaritzburg on Sunday evening after a “runaway truck” crashed into another and caused a huge explosion.

The accident, which involved four trucks and one motor vehicle, took place on the south bound lane before the Peter Brown off-ramp.

KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said two trucks caught fire while a further two trucks and a light motor vehicle were damaged during the crash.

Mngomezulu said: 

“According to reports from the scene, the runaway truck was already on fire when it hit another truck. The light motor vehicle was also hit from behind by one of the trucks.”

Mngomezulu said the driver of the runaway truck suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

No further injuries were from the scene. By 8.30 pm, the fire had been extinguished.
