Letters | How government works

LETTER:

From his letter in The Witness, Venolin Govender is totally unaware of how local government is administered (January 5, “Don’t blame the ANC”).

Govender’s unwarranted attack on the DA confirms his obliviousness of the Municipal Structures Act and the Municipal Systems Act. The northern areas and Woodlands voted for the DA. Unfortunately, the majority in Msunduzi voted for the ANC. Democracy commands that the ANC, as the decision-makers in the capital city, must govern with input from the DA and other parties.

The DA has every right to demand answers from the ANC-led municipality, especially when the majority of ratepayers were abandoned in the dark. In February 2013, the municipality presented a R892-million promise to fix the city’s electricity shortcomings; annoyingly, that was a pipe dream.

In The Witness of January 5, the ANC municipality reckoned that it needs R400m to address the infrastructure.

Govender needs to ponder what would have happened to Parliament if the Western Cape was not a DA province. President Cyril Ramaphosa admitted, “we have a government that works”, referring to the DA.

Keep your eyes and ears to the ground and watch the DA return the uMngeni Municipality to its former glory, under a DA administration!

Perhaps, the maladministration of the city, coupled with the mayor’s overconfidence and a fractured ANC, is why Govender was not so long ago a member of the DA.
