Letters | Put up the price of plastic bags

Doug Morton

I refer to The Witness editorial of April?21. It’s all very well to impose more stringent specifications on the manufacture of plastic shopping bags, but these will only come into effect in 2023.

I refer to The Witness editorial of April 21. It’s all very well to impose more stringent specifications on the manufacture of plastic shopping bags, but these will only come into effect in 2023.

In the meantime, the abuse of plastic bags will continue. It’s too little and far too late. The only way to combat this laziness is to increase the till price of each plastic bag to at least the price, or more, of a cloth or re-usable bag available in supermarkets.

Simple cloth bags can be made at home for next to nothing and remain serviceable for a long time. Alternatively, re-use the plastic bags. All it takes is having the bags with you when shopping.

Our society is a lazy one and it shows at the refuse dump. Several years ago, regulations were introduced to control the thickness of plastic bags, but don’t seem to have been enforced. Cost is the only way to make it work.
