The South African women’s hockey squad, which includes former Carter High School pupil Phumelela “Phumi” Mbande, will bid for respect when tackling the World Cup in Spain and Netherlands in July.
Goalkeeper Mbande and company secured the country’s seventh appearance in the quadrennial tournament by winning the recent African Cup of Nations in Ghana.
July 3: v Belgium
July 5: v Japan
July 6: v Australia.
They will compete in Pool D alongside Australia, Belgium and Japan, while being based in Terrassa in Spain. This is the first tournament and squad selection under recently-appointed coach Giles Bonnet.
The squad includes a number of Olympians, not least Lisa Deetlefs, who has reversed her decision to retire from international hockey.
She is joined in the squad by Tokyo 2021 teammates Mbande, Edith Molikoe, Marizen Marias, Kristen Paton, Robyn Johnson, Onthatile Zulu, Erin Christie, Lilian du Plessis, Quanita Bobbs and Tarryn Lombard.
