Bloemfontein Celtic and Swallows played to a 1-1 draw in their DStv Premiership clash in the Free State on Tuesday.

A tentative opening quarter followed the start of the encounter, as chances from either end proved few and far between for any of the respective outfits.

Celtic’s Ndumiso Mabena had his outing cut short midway through the first half following an injury and had Congolese international Harris Tchilimbou replace him.

Swallows were inches from making the breakthrough in the final five minutes of the half, but Kgaogelo Sekgota flashed a pin-point penetrative delivery to the far side, well off target.

The Birds struggled to get together in additional time and should’ve trailed from a close-range header by Tchilimbou following a corner-kick, but a goal-line clearance ensued.

However, the Dobsonville outfit returned for the second half energised and grabbed the lead after Sekgota picked up a misplaced pass from goalkeeper Sipho Chaine on 55 minutes to volley home.

But the lead was cut short inside five minutes as a low shot in the area from Neo Maema beat Birds goalkeeper Virgil Vries.

In the other match on Tuesday, Baroka beat Chippa United 1-0 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to end their winless run and add to their hosts’ relegation fears.

Chippa goalkeeper Rashid Watenga mistakenly gave the ball to Baroka’s Goodman Mosele, who scored in the 41st minute.
