Industrial Insight 2018

Zululand’s industrial sector is one of the most important drivers of the local economy. After Gauteng province, KwaZulu-Natal’s manufacturing sector is the second largest in South Africa. Nearly a third of South Africa’s manufactured exports are produced in KwaZulu-Natal. This sector also provides a massive 20% of the province’s employment. Here are some of the industries that make Zululand tick.

Toyota Forklift offers support
With its highly skilled technical personnel and state-of-the-art equipment, Toyota Forklift’s in-house engineering department provides its
customers with access to specialised expertise in the maintenance, rebuilds and repairs of Toyota Forklift, BT, Raymond and Flexi material handling equipment distributed by the company in southern Africa.
Based at the head office in Johannesburg, the in-house engineering department of Toyota Forklift, part of the EIE Group, provides dedicated technical support to its products, maximising equipment uptime and life expectancy and, where required, tailoring machines to the specific requirements of the application.
The engineering department’s comprehensive services range from building standard carriages and new loud back rests, to overhauling steering axles and hydraulic cylinders, fitting hose reels and repairing oil tanks and cracked welding.
In addition, modifications carried out to forklifts cover, among others, drive in racking, gas bottle brackets, shortening forks and dropping overhead guards.
Special parts are supplied throughout Toyota Forklift’s network of branches, providing its southern African customer base with direct access to its internationally recognised technical expertise.
As the engineering department does not outsource the critical engineering and boiler making tasks, and carries out its own welding, turning, drilling, gas cutting and brazing in-house, tight quality assurance is maintained during all stages.
At the same time such a comprehensive in-house service also facilitates a faster turnaround time and saves on costs.
‘The engineering department is a vital link in Toyota Forklift’s overall service delivery,’ says Gary Neubert, EIE Group’s CEO.
‘In line with our commitment to building partnerships for life, we have the most comprehensive product support infrastructure in the region aimed at assisting our clients, maximise their investment in our best-in-class brands.
‘Our engineering department, with its specialist expertise, is an invaluable ‘helping hand’ to our field service technicians, quickly carrying out those tasks that cannot be done in the field and to Toyota Forklift’s exacting standards.’

All Isuzus now made under one roof
Isuzu Motors recently announced its business plans in SA, which apart from th
e continued manufacturing of light commercial vehicles in Port Elizabeth, also includes the balance of shareholding in its Isuzu Trucks SA operations.
The launch of Isuzu Motors SA comes after General Motors’ disinvestment from the local market at the end of last year, and the subsequent sale of GM’s Struandale light vehicle plant in Port Elizabeth to Isuzu Motors SA.
Isuzu said it will continue to build its KB range of bakkies in Struandale, as the new MU-X SUV.
The manufacture of Isuzu trucks, including the N, F and FX Series models will move from the current factory in Kempston Road to the same Struandale plant less than 10km away.
Isuzu can’t confirm how long the move will take but says the consolidation process could take at least a year.
The brand currently operates 47 manufacturing plants outside of Japan as part of joint ventures, but the Struandale facility is now the only commercial/light commercial factory running under 100% ownership of Isuzu Japan.
‘Our decision with regards to SA demonstrates the confidence we have in this market and is also indicative of our longer-term view that SA will serve as an important base for our future growth on the African continent,’ said Isuzu President, Masanori Katayama.
All Isuzu vehicles built in Port Elizabeth are sold in SA, and are also exported to sub-Saharan Africa.
At the official launch of Isuzu Motors SA held in Port Elizabeth, Isuzu Motors SA CEO and MD Michael Sacke said that last year Isuzu trucks accounted for around 15% share of SA’s medium and heavy commercial market, thus cementing its leadership position in these segments of the market for over five years in a row.
