A passion for goodwill missions

'No matter the weather, always bring your own sunshine'

ON an average night out with family or friends for supper in Richards Bay, I often noticed a lady with dark brown hair, wearing the most attractive smile selling flowers and teddies. She usually displays an extra dose of energy compared to most people and never did I stop to ask who she was or what the purpose of her flower-teddie selling was, until a few days ago…

She goes by the name Caroline Waldon and if you did happen to see her during the past year, know that all of this is in support of the Cancer Association of SA’s regional fund-raising drive, which involves selling flowers and teddies to people like you and I for a worthy cause.

In 2013 she and other compassionate and driven individuals have raised a combined total of R100 000 towards the regional Cansa Association.

‘Some people are good at spread sheets, others at writing poetry. I’m good at asking if someone needs assistance and making people feel the same passion as I do in assisting those that need it most’, explains Waldon.

She moved to Richards Bay earlier this year and has already started planting her seed of good deeds within the community.

If she had a choice between having a relaxing day or weeding and cleaning out the garage, Waldon would choose the latter. She loves the outdoors, with her hobbies changing from time to time from canoeing, hiking or just ‘catching some sun’.

Roof project

Apart from her evening rendezvous to various restaurants, she is also currently involved in building a much needed roof for the Ikhayalethemba Community Care Centre in Richards Bay.

‘Currently these children cannot attend school when it is raining owing to the leaking roof.’

A generous construction company in Richards Bay has donated the material for the roof and Waldon is currently busy raising money for the labour through selling raffle tickets, of which prizes have been sponsored by local businesses.

‘I think because of my positive attitude I don’t see challenges for what they are, I just steamroll over them’, giggles Waldon.

Her motto in life is ‘no matter the weather, always bring your own sunshine’.

Plans for the future? ‘I’ve planted some trees on arbour day, so I guess I’m now rooted in Richards Bay. I will continue to do charity work and take on the odd new adventure as they come along’.
