TO mark the 16 days of Activism campaign against abuse of women, children, disabled and the elderly, Mandeni Municipality in conjunction with the Department of Social Development launched a much-needed Senior Citizens Club at iSibusisiwe Hall in Mandeni last week.
Speaking at the launch, Mandeni Cllr Nompumelelo Zungu said it was the duty of the municipality to give the elders a platform to meet, socialise and participate in various sporting activities. She said it was the municipality’s priority to try and assist the elderly’s social and personal requirements with daily activities and to help them age with dignity.
The club function under the helm of 16 ward members.
Mandeni Mayor Siphesishle Zulu reiterated that there was a lot to be done to develop the elderly’s quality of lives.
‘As the council we are encouraging the elders to work as one unit so that they will be able to discuss and solve their problems,’ said Zulu.
Speaking on behalf of the Department of Social Development, coordinator for the elderly citizens, Mrs C Mthiyane, encouraged the senior citizens to form more clubs ward by ward so that the elders would be able to use these venues to sell their handwork such as arts and crafts to the public and generate profits to put back into the clubs for future events.
