Future plans at IDP Imbizo

A mass meeting was held to discuss community problems in Hluhluwe.

UMKHANYAKUDE District Municipality(UKDM) kicked off its first Integrated Development Plan (IDP) Budget Imbizo at The Big 5 False Bay, Makhasa Stadium last week

uMkhanyakude District Mayor- Jeffrey Vilane, Big 5 False Bay Mayor-Mrs C Gumede, Acting Municipal Manager-Simon Dlamini, UKDM Speaker-Hlengiwe Mavimbela and Big 5 False Bay Municipal Manager, Bubu Ndlomo, were officials present at the Imbizo.

UKDM Mayor Jeffrey Vilane addressed the more than 2000 community members who gathered at the stadium about the 16 days of Activism and the priority of protecting the women, elders and children in the communities, against sexual violence as well as looking after those with HIV/Aids and getting tested.

‘The reason behind the hosting of such an event is to also ensure that all communities are given an opportunity to interact directly with the municipal officials under the uMkhanyakude family of District municipalities regarding development issues that affect your daily lives within the district,’ he added.

Speaking at the event, Big 5 False Bay Mayor Mrs C Gumede addressed the crowds, highlighting the much-needed housing plans that are in place for communities in the Hluhluwe area.

‘There are 1 300 houses planned to be built in Mqobokazi, 800 houses have already been completed in Nibele and 300 more houses are still going to be built in the same vicinity. The building of 1700 houses in the Makhasa community will also begin from January 2014,’ said Mayor Gumede.

Besides housing issues, Mayor Gumede also informed community residents that the Hluhluwe clinic, police station and a school for the disabled were completed and the municipality officials were busy sorting out logistics such as to how many staff would be needed so that the community can be advised about posts that are due to be advertised in time to come.

She also added that tarring of regional roads such as Sisonke, Malolini roads, to name but a few had begun.

UKDM Mayor Jeffrey Vilane also added that there were plans to build a FET College as well as a University in Hluhluwe in the future.

Some of the plans of multi-year projects leading up to 2030 were also unveiled by the UKDM Acting Municipal Manager, Simon Dlamini, which included the Hluhluwe Water Schemes 1, 2 and 4 phases. He also said that each ward will be receiving three boreholes and 250 Jo Jo tanks had been purchased by the uMkhanyakude District municipality.
