Zini’s pong plant action
A pledge by the uThungulu Muncipality has been made to rid Mtunzini of the foul smell coming at the sewage plant.
THE uThungulu District Muncipality has pledged to take corrective action at the overflowing Mtunzini sewage plant.
The Zululand Observer last month reported that residents had enough about the smell the sewage overflow caused.
uThungulu Municipal Manager, Mandla Nkosi, said on Wednesday that a feasibility study had been done to establish both long- and short-term solutions to the challenges at the plant.
‘This was done so that we can contain the contamination in the interim while implementing a long-term plan to address the underlying problems.’
A meeting was held on 3 June at the Mtunzini Library between the uThungulu District Municipality, ECA Consultants and members representing various organizations in Mtunzini.
A two-phased approach to the problem was presented.
‘The plant is currently overloaded in terms of organic load and unable to process the amount of waste it is receiving.
‘A new model plant with ancillaries will be added along with a new chlorine contact tank which will compliment the existing contact tank.
‘This will ensure enough retention time to achieve adequate disinfection of the effluent.’ Nkosi said.
uThungulu has also applied for approval from the Department of Water Affairs to go ahead with emergency refurbishment work, which is anticipated to be completed by December.
