Surfers take Pelican Island under their wing

On their newly erected signboard the Pelican Island Surf Riders ask visitors to keep their favourite break clean by leaving only their footprints behind.

A GROUP of local longboarders and SUP riders have taken Pelican Island under their wing.

On their newly erected signboard the Pelican Island Surf Riders ask visitors to keep their favourite break clean by leaving only their footprints behind.

The surfers will be doing a cleanup once a month to rid the island of the trash strewn by careless people.

They are joining the island’s longtime unofficial caretaker, PIP (Pelican Island Protector) in keeping this beautiful corner of the harbour tidy.

Long lefts at Peli

Peli, as the Pelican Island Surf Riders call their home break, works on a two-weekly cycle, breaking a few days before and after spring low.

Then, three to four foot lefts peel off the sandbank in front of the island.

But it’s after a weather front has passed over that Peli really comes to life, and four to five foot waves can be surfed for up to 300m.

Thank you

The guys and girls making up the Pelican Island Surf Riders would like to thank local businessman, Craig Webster of Signforce for sponsoring their signboard.

They also appeal to everybody visiting the beaches and harbour to behave in a civilized manner by making use of the bins provided for litter.
