VIDEO: Alkantstrand is open!

Swimming is also being allowed at Newark beach, adjacent to Alkantstrand.

THE main beach at Alkantstrand was opened to bathers today, and they wasted no time in getting into the water in hot, although blustery, conditions.

An 80m stretch of beach in front of the lifeguard house is now open.

‘With sea conditions calm, the beach is relatively safe, especially at low tides when there is some sand between the new geobag wall  and the ocean,’ said senior lifeguard Cyril Mkhize.

Although there are a few stones in the water the seabed is flat and there are no holes so bathers can wade safely to some distance until they get out of their depth.

‘However, the danger will be at spring tides when waves will hit the wall with force and could easily injure bathers, especially children.

‘We appeal to everyone to stay within the red and yellow flags and to listen to our instructions at all times.’
