Community clean-up tackles problem area

The Glenwood and Bulwer Road Residents’ and Ratepayers' Association collborated with a number of local stakeholders to tackle a crime and illegal dumping hotspot in Berea.

THE Glenwood and Bulwer Road Residents’ and Ratepayers Association, in collaboration with We Feed South Africa, the metro police, the eThekwini Municipality’s Parks Department and Durban Solid Waste (DSW), have partnered to clean and clear a crime hotspot and illegal dumping hotspot at the corner of Cato Road and King Dinuzulu Road.

We Feed SA is an non-profit organisation that was established in March 2020. The organisation focuses on sustainable projects through education, empowerment and feeding projects, “We Feed SA has amongst other projects conducted cleanup projects across eThekwini, Ugu and Msunduzi municipalities in 85 cites. Our work is focused predominantly on lower income areas, schools, hospitals, community areas and areas where tourism can be enhanced,” said the organisation in a statement to the Berea Mail.

The massive team of cleaners came together on Tuesday, May 7, to clear the area. “This has been a crime hotspot for a very long time, and in general, there has been a lot of dumping and rubbish in this vicinity for a long time. We came together today just to clean up this entire area, and the metro police are involved to get the guys who sleep under this bridge to move to a new location,” said Heather Roos from the Glenwood and Bulwer Road Residents’ and Ratepayers Association.

Roos says the residents who live near the intersection of the two roads have been living in fear. “It has been a constant nightmare for the residents living here. They have had endless problems, and people walking across the bridge over King Dinuzulu Road, just trying to get home, have been the victims of muggings on a daily basis.”

Roos says they are all excited to see this iniative finally take off. “No one wanted to take this issue on, but We Feed South Africa, the metro police and the eThekwini Municipality’s Parks Department and Durban Solid Waste (DSW) have all really stepped up. People always want to moan at the Park’s Department and DSW, but we need community members to step forward and join campaigns like this one.”
