Reigerpark SAPS conducts GBV and substance abuse awareness campaign

Reigerpark SAPS and Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens tackle the complex issues of intoxicated behavior and gender-based violence in Joe Slovo informal settlement.

Reiger Park SAPS and Gauteng crime prevention wardens conducted an awareness campaign in the Joe Slovo informal settlement on May 15.

The event aimed to shed light on the concerning link between intoxicated behavior and gender-based violence, with a strong focus on fostering a safer environment for all residents.

Gauteng crime prevention wardens engage with a community member in Joe Slovo informal settlement.

Constable Msimanga Johannes, the spokesperson for the police station, highlighted the primary objective of the initiative as sensitising the community to the detrimental effects of alcohol and substance abuse on domestic violence.

“The campaign, which successfully engaged 80 individuals and distributed 90 informative pamphlets, sought to educate residents on the role that alcohol consumption often plays in escalating instances of domestic abuse,” said Msimanga

Johannes emphasised that alcohol is a significant factor in domestic violence cases.

“Most people can’t talk about their problems when they’re sober, and they choose to bottle things up, though after a few drinks, they find the courage to speak up, and sometimes, they end up doing something drastic, like killing their spouses,” said Johannes.

Johannes added that the awareness campaign is part of the ongoing 16 Days of Activism initiative, which aims to address gender-based violence and promote a safer society.

He encouraged all stakeholders who want to be part of the team running these campaigns to come forward.
“Working together, we can win this fight,” he said.
